UC-Riverside Medical School Homeless Clinic
The doctors, residents and medical students of UC - Riverside Medical School & Riverside Community Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program provide volunteer services in a Homeless Clinic. They like to send each patient home with proper winter weather gear if they have come in to clinic without appropriate clothing for the elements now that the temperatures have turned colder in the area.

project must-knows
The temperatures in the area dip into the upper 30's/low 40's at night, so these winter items do not need to be as thick and warm as say the items for North Dakota. However, it is quite cold for a person living on the streets. This location is approved for a single layer of high quality fleece as it will be warm enough for the average temperatures during their coldest month. For all fleece projects, we ask that you use no-pill fleece or higher quality. The Blizzard fleece that is the cheapest pills badly after just one or two washes and does not hold up to repeat washes. We want our donated items to last more than one winter. They are only collecting adult sized items at this time.
1) Earwamers/Headbands - These can be sewn, knit or crochet. They can be single or double layer fleece. If you've never made these before, have a look at our suggested patterns for a few good ideas!
2) Gloves/Mittens - These can be full gloves/mittens or the fingerless variety and these can be sewn, knit or crochet. If you sew these out of fleece, a single layer or double layer of fleece is okay. We have some great suggested patterns. Have a look at some of the fun up-cycled sweater pattern ones too!
3) Scarves/Cowls/Scoodies - They need any of these great items that help keep a person warm and any of these items can be sewn, knit or crochet. Scarves can be traditional or infinity. Cowls are wonderful and keep folks really warm as well and are great for folks sleeping on the streets as they can cover their face while they sleep and keep them toasty. A scoodie (or hooded scarf) is also nice as it is a two-for-one combo. Check out or patterns for this both sewn and crochet!
4) Warm Winter Hats - These items need to be functional and warm. We ask that if you are knitting or crocheting you use a tight weave and not have big holes/gaps in your stitches so that hat will be warm and snuggly. Any yarn from our Master list for Hopa Mountain hats will be just perfect for these hats. If sewing, a single or double layer of high quality fleece is great.
Many of these patterns have upcoming Zoom Sewing classes, please check out our Event schedule in The Crafting Change Community! If you have questions about sewing any of our patterns, please email Kathy Lawrence kathyl@craftingchange.org, if you have questions about knitting or crocheting, please contact Robyn Peters Robyn@craftingchange.org
