They serve people in 3 states: Colorado, New Mexico and Las Vegas, NV. Planned Parenthood empowers individuals and families in the communities they serve to make informed choices regarding their health and wellness. They see a future where all people have equitable opportunity to experience health and wellness including high-quality sexual and reproductive health care provided with respect and without judgement. what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Heart Hugs Sew 500 500 Heating Pads Sew 500 500 Bags (Adults) Sew 500 500 project must-knows We have been asked to help Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains with several items in assistance of patient care. First, we were asked if there is a reusable solution for patient care bags that would offer some happiness, dignity and discretion for patients leaving clinic with medication and materials and resources after medical appointments. Second, The Pocket Heart Hugs will be added to their resource pack given to patients with after their appointments. Prior to distribution, our laminated poem will be added to the Heart Hug by Martha. Third, patients are advised to use a heating pad after certain appointments to help with cramping. Many patients can't afford this. However a rice heating pad made out of flannel holds it's heat for up to an hour! 1) Tote Bags- Any pattern, any style. Preferred Pattern: The Crafting Change Easy Tote, Green Bag Lady, Crafting Change Taco Tote or Earth Day Jean Tote. Lined or unlined. Quilting Cotton, cotton/poly blends, Lightweight Canvas or denim (no upholstery fabric for this partner please). Sized between 16"x16" and 18"x18" Bright and cheerful fabrics like Superheroes, Florals, batiks in bright colors or denim jeans totes. Fabrics to Avoid: Pastels. Baby Prints Fabrics with words like mommy/daddy/family Drugs/Alcohol/Bad Words/Inappropriate Images 2) Pocket Heart Hugs - Bright and cheerful Heart Hugs bring comfort. Same fabric restrictions as the tote bags. You can see our video below on how to construct them or follow any pattern you find for "pocket prayer quilts" however we are only using hearts, no religious emblems allowed. Carol Grape and Deb Evans found a fun new way to do these with pinking shears, and we've now added a video for this to our patterns! 3) Rice Bag Heating Pads - These small flannel heating pads are super fast and easy to sew up. Our team on the ground in Colorado will fill them up with rice and sew them closed, so all you have to do is create the empty shells following our super easy pattern and video tutorial created by Carol Grape carol@craftingchange.org Please remember to use COTTON THREAD! These will go inside the patient totes we are crafting along with the heart hugs and given to patients to offer them additional comfort to help alleviate cramping and pain. As the patients served in this region are primarily low-income PPRM often has to provide financial assistance to patients to purchase heating pads however their funds are low due to increase requests to cover travel expenses of patients. This little item will go a long way to help. Rice is being provided by volunteers in Colorado. Please remember the following when selecting fabric: Fabrics to Avoid: Pastels. Hopa Mountain COMPLETED! 5/1/24 COLLECTION RESUMES 9/1/24 01 Read about our partner charity and see the items we are crafting 02 Read the Project Must-Knows 03 Pick a pattern from our approved or suggested pattern collection 04 Shipping address, print a care slip & tally your donation this is how it works About Supporting the coordination of local response efforts in rural and tribal communities across the Northern Rockies and the Great Plains, Hopa Mountain is a 501(c)3 organization doing great work. They invest in rural and tribal citizen leaders working primarily in the areas of early childhood education, informal science education, service-learning, ecological and human health, and non profit development. They have been integral in the pandemic relief efforts for the Tribes in the entire region. what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed project must-knows 1. WINTER HATS: Winter in the Northern Rocky Mountains is LONG. We are working with Hopa Mountain to get them a large supply of winter hats for the Elementary aged children they serve. FOCUS KIDS AGES 5-12. While this age group i s our primary focus, the request is for all sizes of hats infant through adult. They are looking for "generational" ha ts that will last. By generational we mean super high quality hats that are made with great quality yarn, have been made with great technique and have used a pattern. We have knit, crochet and sewn patterns. Our requirements are: Are they functional and do they keep a person warm? Are they crafted with a pattern and high quality, did you use good technique, would you wear it or give it as a gift to your Mom or best friend? Are they durable and washable? Are they safe and free of embellishments that would be a choking hazards for children? You may use any crochet or knit pattern for this project (please peek at our suggested patterns to get an idea of what Hopa Mountain has asked for). Looking at our suggested patterns prior to starting this project will give you a good idea of what we are looking for before you begin making your first hat. Keep in mind that we are looking for functional, warm winter hats, not decorative hats. These need to be a tight weave without holes. But not so tight that the hat is a bowl or helmet. It is very cold in the Northern Rockies, so this is very important. These need to cover the ears of the person wearing them. Our Advisory Board is continuously testing yarn by using it and washing/drying it at least 5 times to see how it holds up. Please review our Recommended & Tested Yarn List for our suggestions, though this list is by no means exhaustive. Please check our Recommended & Tested Yarn List to see which types have passed our rigorous testing and we prefer, however you are welcome to do your own at home testing on other yarns to see if they will also hold up and be able to be "generational". As a reminder, using yarn that is more than 5 years old, yarn without a label where you do not know where it came from is ill advised. Yarn technology has changed a lot in the last few years. If you are in doubt about your pattern or your yarn, please send your questions to our Advisory Board Member Robyn Peters robyn@craftingchange.org . We also have a few sewn patterns for polar fleece hats. We ask that you buy high quality fleece that does not pill. Due to the harsh winters, we are asking you use only 2 layer hats to keep the children warm, no single layers please, Questions about sewing hats for Hopa? Burrito Pillow Case- These are for all ages 5-18. All pillows are all the standard size pillow no matter the age you are making for. It is appreciated if fun fabrics are used, and kids love licensed prints like Marvel, Comic Book characters like Batman and Superman, Harry Potter, Disney. The pillowcase is made from three coordinating materials. The finished size should be 20”-21” wide by 30-32” long which fits a standard pillow. Please use soft, non scratchy material: woven quilter’s cotton, woven cotton blends as well as flannel. Fabric prints to avoid would be ones with drugs, alcohol, weapons religious, or holiday prints fabric with the words mommy, daddy or family or any variant (grandma, etc.) 2. Knit/Crochet Soap Sacks- Please ensure your soap sacks end up being the standard size of a soap sack 4"x6". When soap is distributed it has to be in it's original packaging which is often a box. Often soap sacks are too small. You can use a 4x6 index card as a handy guide to keep in your project bag. It is a good idea to check your pattern every once in awhile to ensure you are meeting the size guidelines. Thank you. 3. Winter hats & gloves in assorted sizes; toddlers, kids, teens. These can be sewn fleece or knit/crochet. Winter is cold in Kansas, please use patterns that are warm! They need these in many sizes from toddlers to teens (which wear adult size) and it is not important for us to track what size you send as the items we send will only be part of what they receive. Nashville Launch Pad 01 Read about our partner charity and see the items we are crafting 02 Read the Project Must-Knows 03 Pick a pattern from our approved or suggested pattern collection 04 Shipping address, print a care slip & tally your donation this is how it works About The mission of Nashville Launch Pad is to create a network of temporary, safer, street-free sleeping shelters for unhoused young adults which are open and affirming to LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies. The have 3 main programs: Emergency Shelter - up to 25 young adults in congregate shelter in local churches nightly from Nov 1 - March 31 Independent-Supported Living Program (ISLP)- up to 6 LGBTQ+ young adults supported in an apartment space Mobile Housing Navigation Center - up to 15 beds available through the Coordinated Care Entry system in partnership with Community Care Fellowship what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Quilt Twin Size Sew 12 10 Blankets (Young Adults) Sew/Knit/Crochet 50 45 Pillowcase Sew 75 55 project must-knows We are crafting for "Young Adults" this is ages 18-24. For 2 of their programs, The Independent Supported Living Program (up to a 6 Month stay) and the Mobile Housing Navigation Center (up to a 120 Day stay), the young adults have the opportunity to stay for longer periods of time and settle down while they look for permanent housing, educational opportunity and jobs. We will be helping the young adults in these 2 programs with blankets and pillowcases to make them feel more at home during this transition. CRITICAL INFORMATION: We have been asked to not use "Pride" themed fabric or fabric that in anyway would identify the owner of the items as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. It is important to remember that these young adults are in a very vulnerable situation often having been displaced from their home due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. Pillowcases: Pattern: Use the Burrito Pillowcase pattern for sewing. This pattern creates a clean and professional finish. Fabric: You may use either cotton or flannel fabric for the pillowcases. These fabrics are durable and comfortable. Fabric Restrictions: Please avoid using fabrics that depict weapons, drugs, alcohol, or themes related to pride, rainbows, or any fabric/symbols that could "out" someone as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Quality: Ensure that stitches are secure and seams are finished neatly for durability. Blankets/Quilts/Lapghans: Accepted Techniques: blankets can be sewn, knitted, or crocheted. The ideal size for blankets is 45 inches by 60 inches (114 cm by 152 cm), which provides comfort and practicality for recipients. Fabric and Yarn: Use high-quality yarns and fabrics that are cozy and durable. Please refer to our master yarn list for suggestions on suitable yarns for blankets. Avoid using yarns or fabrics in colors of the rainbow. Please don't make blankets overly scrappy. Fabric and Yarn Restrictions: Avoid using fabrics that depict weapons, drugs, alcohol, or themes related to pride, rainbows, or any symbols that could "out" someone as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Quality: Ensure your blankets are well-crafted with secure stitches or seams, reflecting the care and dedication of our volunteers. Twin Size Quilts They are looking for approximately 12 Twin Size Quilts per year. If you have any interest in constructing some truly lovely, warm, twin size quilts that residents of their Independent Supported Living Program could come home to, they would love that. Size: 70"x90" Fabric Restrictions: Avoid using fabrics that depict weapons, drugs, alcohol, or themes related to pride, rainbows, or any symbols that could "out" someone as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Fabric: Cotton & Batting Technique: Sewn Only ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Delivery Start Date: October 1, 2024 for Winter Items Feel free to begin preparing for the upcoming winter season. If you would like to help unsheltered LGBTQIA+ young adults in Nashville, please follow these guidelines: Accepted Items: We are looking for hats, cowls, scarves, gloves, mittens, and fingerless gloves. Technique: Sewn, knitted, or crocheted. Color Preferences: Use subdued colors such as browns, blacks, navy blue, forest greens, etc. These colors help the young adults blend into their surroundings and feel safe. Fabric and Yarn Restrictions: Avoid using colors of the rainbow or Pride-inspired patterns. The young adults served by Nashville Launch Pad often come from difficult backgrounds where their gender identity or sexual orientation was not accepted. It’s important that the items do not make them stand out. Quality: Ensure your items are well-crafted and durable, providing warmth and comfort throughout the winter months. We are specifically helping them with their Leaving A Legacy project. The Leaving a Legacy project was created in 2017 as a memorial to Patrice Berman's beloved husband, Eddie. Patrice, the Founder of Raising Hope For Others, took her grief and turned it into this project. His giving spirit and compassion for all is reflected in their comfort bags. The charitable bags are given for free to anyone in need of comfort. This serves a local need, bringing neighbors together to support each other during trying times. Please make these with heart buttons or charms so they have no religious connotations and can be used by anyone for whatever purpose they choose. 3) Port Pillow - This protective device attaches to the seat belt of the car to soften it when going over where a person's port may be. Stuff them very firm so they do the most good. 4) Cosmetic Bags - Any pattern that will finish at approximately 7"x9" is acceptable to Leaving A Legacy. They do prefer a boxed bottom. They fill the cosmetic bag with smaller items like chapstick and lotion before putting in the tote. 5) Chemo Caps - (Sewn/Knit/Crochet) We have many wonderful patterns for sewing, knitting or crocheting up soft and comfortable chemo caps. If knitting/crocheting these caps please follow our approved/tested yarn list. DON'Ts: - No camouflage fabric, as it's exclusively used by the military in Ghana. - Avoid religious and holiday-themed prints (Easter Bunnies, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Santa). - Exclude fabrics depicting drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or weapons. 2) Reusable Menstrual Pads Each kit we make includes 2 medium and 2 heavy pads. Pads must have 1 or 2 layers of Zorb, a bottom layer of PUL, and Kam Snaps closures. Choose dark, colorful, patterned, or busy fabrics for your topper to help hide stains. Use any template shape in sizes between 8.5" and 10.5" in length are accepted. When shipping your completed pads, please label them by absorbency and length for easier sorting. We offer resources for pad construction, including a video tutorial for first-time makers. Contact us for assistance or to order discount supplies. . KAM SNAPS: Each pad must have 2 size 20 Kam Snaps applied on the wing. Refer to our video tutorial for assistance. If applying your own snaps, test each snap multiple times to ensure security, functionality, and that satisfying snap sound. Don't have a Kam-Snap tool? Ship the pads without snaps, and we'll apply them for you at Crafting Change HQ. Interested in purchasing Kam Snap supplies? We recommend buying directly from Kam Snaps, a family-owned small business. They offer a great starter set with pliers and snaps! Check that kit out here , or browse the rest of their site! 3) Wet Bags Wet bags serve two main functions: holding soiled pads while girls are at school and serving as a vessel for cleaning pads at home. Wet bags must be waterproof. We have one approved pattern for these bags, which has proven effective. Watch our video tutorial on properly sealing these bags. For any questions, email Martha for assistance. 4) Sewn Soap Sack The Sewn Soap Sack made from a washcloth is tailored for The Menstrual Hygiene Kit Resembling a washcloth, it offers familiarity the for girls while featuring a twill loop for convenient hanging and drying of soap. Please ensure accurate measurements and avoid using white or light colors as these will be used during menstrual cycles and get stained with blood. 5) Crochet & Knit Bandages- We're crafting cotton bandages for rural clinics/hospitals in Western Ghana. Only 5 approved yarns and one specific pattern are permitted for this project. Participants must be experienced crocheters or knitters capable of checking gauge. While the pattern is simple, consistency and gauge are crucial. Start with 2 skeins of yarn for your first 2 bandages that will be quality checked by our medical advisor before ordering more yarn. Find all necessary information on this information sheet. 7) Receiving Blankets for the NICU- We're creating swaddling/receiving blankets for the NICU at Half Assini Government Hospital in Half Assini, Ghana. Blankets should measure between 36x36 and 40x40 inches square. All blankets, regardless of style, must have finished hems. Narrow rolled serger hems are recommended for single-layer blankets if you have a serger. Accepted fabric options include: Single layer flannel 2-layer quilting cotton Single or double layer jersey Single or double layer double gauze UNDERWEAR : Each kit includes 2 pairs of underwear in girls' sizes 12/14. Consider purchasing from our Amazon Wish List or taking advantage of BOGO sales at Fruit of the Loom, Black Friday deals or check local retailers like Target/Walmart for clearance items. - Board(Bios) | Craftingchange
Learn more about our Executive Board Robyn Peters robyn@craftingchange.org Canadian expat. Retired scientist. Photographer. Alto. Lifelong crafter. After more than a year of daily mask-making for local and national needs, it's time to bring other crafts into the fold. In the early months of Crafting Change, I joined the team as a fiber arts advisor, using my experience as a test knitter to guide craftivists towards using the best choices of yarn and patterns to make items that best served our newfound partner charities. Once we had an enthusiastic team making cold-weather items, I turned my fiber-arts attention to first aid and hygiene needs at home and abroad. My heart is with girls struggling to stay in school in Ghana, and to that end, I spend much of my energy producing menstrual hygiene kits for the Keep Girls In School Campaign. "I cannot do all the good that the world needs. But the world needs all the good that I can do." - Jana Stanfield. Mary Dredge mary@craftingchange.org I have always been creative and crafty. I was a photo album and card maker for 5 years, studied herbalism for 3 years, and getting sustainable when the pandemic hit. Friends and family were needing masks. My sewing skills were ok, so I dusted off my sewing machine, researched the easiest mask design and I was sewing masks! It was a lonely beginning working full-time virtually during the day and then sewing masks for hours into the night. I loved helping people and found a new purpose – helping others. I wanted to do more to help those in my community. I started sewing pencil pouches for low-income high school students and filling them with basic school supplies. I was making fleece hats for outreach programs and many other small activities. It was great, but still lonely. Then I found Crafting Change by chance, a moment of watching the news on the television, I never watch. There was Tiffany talking about her nonprofit. My husband said – you should check in to that and I did. Best decision ever. After mask making was complete, I found a partner charity that I am passionate about through Crafting Change that I never would have found. By day, I am a Project Manager for a local financial company. I run my own handmade product business supporting sustainability and kindness. I love making herbal remedies and tea and can’t wait for the garden to fill in with herbs. I am always looking for ways to reform the status quo and offer support. Life is so much better doing the things we love with friends! That is Crafting Change. "I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples" – Mother Teresa. Carol Grape carol@craftingchange.org Carol Grape grew up in Maine and received her BFA in Sculpture (1978) from Maine College of Art & Design (formerly Portland School of Art). From there she went to Kent State University for her MFA in Sculpture (1982) then on to NYC for 6 years. In NYC Grape was an artist’s assist, painted apartments and sets, worked for College Art Association, and Bernice Steinbaum Gallery. While in NY she became very involved with the Women’s Caucus for Art and worked for the National President for 2 years. In 1989 she and her future husband Mike moved to Northern Kentucky. Grape began working at the Art Academy of Cincinnati in PR then as the Alumni Director before joining the Adjunct Faculty and eventually Gallery Director and Chair of the Master of Art in Art Education (MAAE). Summer program. In 1994 She joined the faculty at Thomas More College as an adjunct and in 1995 She became the Gallery Director. While in Northern Kentucky Grape showed her work in numerous group exhibitions and two one person shows at the Carnegie Arts Center in Covington. She received a grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women. Summer of 2004 Carol and her husband Mike moved to Colorado. Grape started her own successful real estate photography business which she did for 16 years before her retirement at the end of 2021. In 2022 she completed her first art installation (Reverent Boundaries) in many years at Thomas More University in Northern KY. Taylor Herbert taylor@craftingchange.org As an attorney with the Public Defender’s office, I have a lot of experience dealing with the most vulnerable and have experienced the vast inequities when it comes to allocation of resources. This was only exacerbated by the pandemic. I was so excited to see my mom get involved in mask making and was able to help with making bias tape for her masks. Helping her with this new endeavor is just a natural progression and I’m extremely honored to be able to help local communities around the country. Joy Russell joy@craftingchange.org I have been an Accounting Consultant for more than 20 years. My heart is with serving children. I am the founder of a non profit serving homeless and foster children of Southern Colorado. I started working as an Admin for Million Mask Challenge and then moved to the GetPPE call team. I have sewn hundreds of children's masks and look forward to creative crafts that can further help kids. My favorite part of working with MMC and GetPPE this past year has been meeting new friends all over the country. It is wonderful to sew and craft with a team while helping others. Martha Richmond martha@craftingchange.org My sister Laura and I learned from an early age that it is better to give than receive. I can’t remember a time when our family wasn’t helping someone. Be it spending time with families evacuated from hurricanes, or volunteering with service groups. Back in 1977 my mom had a devastating cerebral aneurism that resulted in her paralysis on one side. To help her feel useful and part of the community, I started making security blankets. While I stitched, I found myself thinking about who might receive our gift of love. We would take them to the NICU or Ronald McDonald House in San Antonio so she could interact with the children and parents. I would attach a stamped envelope to the blankets where mothers and children would write to her. She developed special bonds with these families and even sent a dedicated pen pal to college and nursing school. And now I send blankets to her children. That experience with mom is what started my love of sewing for others. When Covid mask making had dwindled in earIy 2021, someone recommended the National Day of Service Sew-Along. That day I found a wonderful community of like minded sewists. I was elated when shortly thereafter, Tiffany started Crafting Change. And overnight we needed partners to serve. At the time, I was working with Weld County Foster Care in Greeley, and Pipers Project in Kansas, and soon they were added as two of our first partners. What I love about Crafting Change is not only do we make items for people that need them, but we also are a dedicated group of crafters that need to be creating for others. I am honored to be part of the Board and will help to continue the amazing success of Crafting Change. I love that we have so many partners and projects so everyone can find something they enjoy. Join in on one of our weekly zooms and you will be hooked on the useful tips, and camaraderie. Let’s get Crafting Change! Tiffany Herbert tiffany@craftingchange.org After nearly a year of sewing masks alone I was burned out and ready to retire. Working nearly 18 hour days 7 days a week on pandemic relief for Get PPE had me feeling uninspired. In January I was contacted by the Inaugural Committee about hosting a National Day of Service Event. I decided to put together a National Virtual Sew-A-Thon. During the event I met a Zoom Room full of amazing humans. On the NDS we crafted and donated more than 17,000 masks and scrub caps for those in need and Crafting Change was born out of the inspiration I took from the humans I sewed alongside of in that Zoom Room! As we saw the need for cloth masks slowing, I knew our skills and talents could be harnessed into something else wonderful! My soul was lit on fire and I knew that pandemic relief was just the beginning. 1.3 million pieces of PPE is the tip of the iceberg. Look out, our sewing machines and crochet hooks and knitting needles and paint brushes and creativity are going to change lives. You can choose to spend your time and talents anywhere, I'm so glad you choose to spend it here with us! We will continue crafting the change we want to see in the world. We did it one mask at a time, what will it be next? Let's find out together! Robyn Bio Mary Bio Carl Bio TaylorBio Joy Bio Martha Bio Tiffany Bio
