At least 40% of the homeless youth in New York City identify as LGBTQ+. Knit the Rainbow works to empower and protect these youth by providing them with handmade knit & crochet winter clothing accessories. Knit the Rainbow (KtR) is the first organization of its kind in the United States, providing thousands of hand-made winter garments a year for homeless LGBTQ+ Youth. Our programs are dedicated to giving these youth a warm and fashionable protective layer of clothing that is imperative to their comfort and survival during harsh winter months. what are we crafting? LGBTQIA+ youth living on the streets are trying to blend in. They have been thrown out of their homes for their sexuality or gender identity. They don't want a rainbow on their body to further target them on the streets. Colors that both hide dirt and help them blend in keep them safe. They serve people in 3 states: Colorado, New Mexico and Las Vegas, NV. Planned Parenthood empowers individuals and families in the communities they serve to make informed choices regarding their health and wellness. They see a future where all people have equitable opportunity to experience health and wellness including high-quality sexual and reproductive health care provided with respect and without judgement. what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Heart Hugs Sew 500 29 Heating Pads Sew 500 33 Bags (Adults) Sew 500 292 project must-knows We have been asked to help Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains with several items in assistance of patient care. First, we were asked if there is a reusable solution for patient care bags that would offer some happiness, dignity and discretion for patients leaving clinic with medication and materials and resources after medical appointments. Second, The Pocket Heart Hugs will be added to their resource pack given to patients with after their appointments. Prior to distribution, our laminated poem will be added to the Heart Hug by Martha. Third, patients are advised to use a heating pad after certain appointments to help with cramping. Many patients can't afford this. However a rice heating pad made out of flannel holds it's heat for up to an hour! 1) Tote Bags- Any pattern, any style. Preferred Pattern: The Crafting Change Easy Tote, Green Bag Lady, Crafting Change Taco Tote or Earth Day Jean Tote. Lined or unlined. Quilting Cotton, cotton/poly blends, Lightweight Canvas or denim (no upholstery fabric for this partner please). Sized between 16"x16" and 18"x18" Bright and cheerful fabrics like Superheroes, Florals, batiks in bright colors or denim jeans totes. Fabrics to Avoid: Pastels. Baby Prints Fabrics with words like mommy/daddy/family Drugs/Alcohol/Bad Words/Inappropriate Images 2) Pocket Heart Hugs - Bright and cheerful Heart Hugs bring comfort. Same fabric restrictions as the tote bags. You can see our video below on how to construct them or follow any pattern you find for "pocket prayer quilts" however we are only using hearts, no religious emblems allowed. Carol Grape and Deb Evans found a fun new way to do these with pinking shears, and we've now added a video for this to our patterns! 3) Rice Bag Heating Pads - These small flannel heating pads are super fast and easy to sew up. Our team on the ground in Colorado will fill them up with rice and sew them closed, so all you have to do is create the empty shells following our super easy pattern and video tutorial created by Carol Grape carol@craftingchange.org Please remember to use COTTON THREAD! These will go inside the patient totes we are crafting along with the heart hugs and given to patients to offer them additional comfort to help alleviate cramping and pain. As the patients served in this region are primarily low-income PPRM often has to provide financial assistance to patients to purchase heating pads however their funds are low due to increase requests to cover travel expenses of patients. This little item will go a long way to help. Rice is being provided by volunteers in Colorado. Please remember the following when selecting fabric: Fabrics to Avoid: Pastels. They invest in rural and tribal citizen leaders working primarily in the areas of early childhood education, informal science education, service-learning, ecological and human health, and non profit development. They have been integral in the pandemic relief efforts for the Tribes in the entire region. what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Warm Winter Hats Sew/Knit/Crochet/Loom 2000 1236 project must-knows 1. WINTER HATS: Winter in the Northern Rocky Mountains is LONG. We are working with Hopa Mountain to get them a large supply of winter hats for the Elementary aged children they serve. Our goal at Crafting Change is to keep Elementary age kids warm and healthy this winter so they don't miss any school. WINTER HATS KIDS AGES 5-12. As always, they will accept hats for all ages except newborns, but please remember our focus of keeping elementary kids warm and healthy so they don't miss school this winter. Our goal is to send "generational" ha ts. What does that mean? By generational we mean super high quality hats that are made with high quality yarn or fleece that have been made with great technique and have used a pattern and will last to be passed down from one sibling to the next after repeated washings. Hats that will last for years. Our requirements Are they functional and do they keep a person warm? Are they high quality and crafted using a pattern? Did you use good technique? Are your seams hidden and tails woven securely? Would you wear it or give it as a gift to your Mom or best friend? Are they durable and washable? These need to be a tight weave without holes that let the cold air in, but not so tight that the hat is a bowl or helmet. Are they safe and free of embellishments that would be a choking hazards for children? Poms are okay if they are washable; if they are not washable (like faux fur) they must be removable. Don't infantilize the kids, functionality and warmth trumps fun for the harsh weather they face. Please peek at our suggested patterns to get an idea of what Hopa Mountain has asked for. Hats need to cover the ears of the person wearing them. Use any pattern you like basing it off of what Hopa Mountain has suggested below. Our Advisory Board is continuously testing yarn by using it and washing/drying it at least 5 times to see how it holds up. Please review our Recommended & Tested Yarn List for our suggestions, though this list is by no means exhaustive. Recommended & Tested Yarn List As a reminder, using yarn that is more than 5 years old, yarn without a label or yarn from a thrift store is ill advised. Yarn technology has changed a lot in the last few years. If you are in doubt about your pattern or your yarn, please contact or Fiber Arts Advisory Board Member Robyn Peters robyn@craftingchange.org . We also have a few sewn patterns for polar fleece hats. We ask that you buy high quality fleece that does not pill and only use patterns that are 2 layers. The Foster Network’s mission is to empower and support foster parents so they can in turn provide a safe and caring environment giving each child and adolescent the opportunity to thrive. The Foster Network works to provide the following services for children in foster care: Activity reimbursement scholarships Camp reimbursement scholarships Clothing Personal hygiene items Beds Dressers While continuing to provide these ongoing services, the association has identified some important and unmet needs. As the number of children in foster care continues to climb, we believe this trend can be reversed. By identifying barriers to success, we believe we can take a preventative approach to ending the generational cycle of abuse and neglect among families in our community. what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed project must-knows We will be helping The Foster Network with 2 items for their Welcome Bags. In each welcome bag they put a fresh pair of pjs, a new blanket, underwear, a pillowcases and a hygiene kit. They provide these to each child entering foster care. Please read the information for each project we are working on for important details so you construct items that will be helpful to this charity partner. UPDATE 8/21/23 THEY CURRENTLY DON'T NEED TOTE BAGS. Fabrics to avoid: our usual caveats: no drugs, alcohol, weapons or religion, no holiday prints. New Restrictions: Nothing with the words mommy, daddy or family on them. 1) Burrito Pillow Case - These are for all ages 2-18. All pillows are all the standard size pillow no matter the age you are making for. They distribute more of these than any other item. It is appreciated if fun fabrics are used, and kids love licensed prints like Marvel, Comic Book characters like Batman and Superman, Harry Potter, Disney. Please follow the same fabric restrictions as for our tote bags above. Ensure you read our project overview sheet for details about crafting this particular item for this particular charity before you begin sewing. 2) Cosmetic Bags - These are for girls ages 12 and up to use to hold their menstrual hygiene supplies. Teens really enjoy fabrics with licensed prints, denim and modern fabrics. Any cosmetic bag pattern is ok as long as it mets size guidelines of 9x7 when finished. The flatter styles are preferred vs. boxy styles so they easily fit inside a backpack or purse. Their hospice census averages about 10 patients per month. 1) Quilts: (Sewn Only) Fabrics for any patient to offer comfort in Hospice. These will be used during care and given to the family to keep after the patient has passed. A variety of fabrics for all genders and interests are appreciated. Nurses pick out just the right quilt for the right patient. Approximate Lapghan size is 36x48"; perfect for folks resting in bed or sitting in a chair. All quilts need to be between 36x48 the smallest and 45x60 the biggest. All styles such as Quilts, rag quilts, fleece/flannel/cotton blankets as long as they are special and will make an impact for the family. 2) Twiddle Muffs: knit/crochet Twiddle muffs are wonderful at providing a comforting sensory experience. Patients will redirect their fidgeting to the muff. items on both the outside and inside keep it fun. 3) FIDDLE MATS Creating a mat is part art, part science. Following the motto "First Do No Harm," Crafting Change has developed this project using science-based research to complement our craftivists' creativity. Why Fiddle Mats? Individuals with Alzheimer's, dementia, or aging often show anxiety or agitation through their hands, fidgeting with clothes, blankets, wounds, or IVs. Fiddle mats provide different textures and activities—such as things to open, push, or slide—to help soothe this fidgeting and restore calm. Crafting Guidelines: Approved Squares: Use squares from our approved library only. Balance: Ensure your mat has a balance of elements from each category: Functional, Sensory, and Auditory. Color Choices: Read our entire document on color choices to ensure your mat soothes, rather than agitates, the patient.
