The have 3 main programs: Emergency Shelter - up to 25 young adults in congregate shelter in local churches nightly from Nov 1 - March 31 Independent-Supported Living Program (ISLP)- up to 6 LGBTQ+ young adults supported in an apartment space Mobile Housing Navigation Center - up to 15 beds available through the Coordinated Care Entry system in partnership with Community Care Fellowship what are we crafting? For 2 of their programs, The Independent Supported Living Program (up to a 6 Month stay) and the Mobile Housing Navigation Center (up to a 120 Day stay), the young adults have the opportunity to stay for longer periods of time and settle down while they look for permanent housing, educational opportunity and jobs. We will be helping the young adults in these 2 programs with blankets and pillowcases to make them feel more at home during this transition. CRITICAL INFORMATION: We have been asked to not use "Pride" themed fabric or fabric that in anyway would identify the owner of the items as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. It is important to remember that these young adults are in a very vulnerable situation often having been displaced from their home due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. Twin Size Quilts They are looking for approximately 12 Twin Size Quilts per year. If you have any interest in constructing some truly lovely, warm, twin size quilts that residents of their Independent Supported Living Program could come home to, they would love that. Size: 70"x90" Fabric Restrictions: Avoid using fabrics that depict weapons, drugs, alcohol, or themes related to pride, rainbows, or any symbols that could "out" someone as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Fabric: Cotton & Batting Technique: Sewn Only Winter Collection Begins Again September 1, 2025 Winter Items For unsheltered LGBTQIA+ young adults in Nashville, please follow these guidelines: Accepted Items: We are looking for hats and gloves/mittens/fingerless gloves. Technique: Sewn, knitted, or crocheted. Color Preferences: Use subdued colors such as browns, blacks, navy blue, forest greens, etc. These colors help the young adults blend into their surroundings and feel safe. Each handmade item plays a critical role in promoting dignity, health, and empowerment. 🧵 1. Cosmetic Bags Use any sewing pattern you like — suggested size is approximately 7"x9". Boxed corners are optional. Any fabric design is welcome, but please avoid prints featuring drugs, alcohol, nudity, weapons, or violence. These bags support all menstruating individuals, from teens receiving first-period kits to unhoused adults. 🎒 2. Drawstring Backpacks Please use sturdy fabric — these are distributed directly to unhoused individuals. Suggested materials: Canvas, Duck, Denim, or Upholstery fabric Do not use regular quilting cotton as it’s not durable enough for this use. 2. Soap Sacks Knit & Crochet only Please ensure your sacks are ~4"x6", use an index card as a guide if needed. We have had issues recently with many SACKS being much smaller than the pattern. SACKS need to be able to hold a full size bar of soap in a box. Needs to have a tag attached They gladly accept donations of soap as well, but it is not required to send them filled. 🩸 4. Mini Menstrual Kit (6-piece kit) Each kit must include the following items, packed together and ready to distribute: 1 Wet Bag 2 Medium Absorbency Pads (with snaps attached) 2 Heavy Absorbency Pads (with snaps attached) Be sure to mark heavy pads clearly with either a figure 8 stitch pattern or a second line of stitching. 1 Instruction Sheet How to assemble your kit for shipping: Fold and snap all 4 pads with PUL side out. Place all 4 pads and the instruction sheet inside the wet bag and place in your shipment. Note on your care slip the number of kits, not the number of each item in the kit. They invest in rural and tribal citizen leaders working primarily in the areas of early childhood education, informal science education, service-learning, ecological and human health, and non profit development. What We Need: Hats must cover the ears and be functional, warm, and durable. Use high-quality yarn or fleece and follow a tested pattern. Aim for “generational quality” — hats that hold up to repeated washings and can be passed down. Tight weave to block cold air (but not stiff like a helmet). Both women, having worked over 10 years on sets, have continually asked why the leftover gourmet food from catering is thrown out and not donated. Now, this 501(c)3 organization takes perceived waste and redistributes it to the homeless throughout the Los Angeles area. Working closely with Film & Television sets, they take food that would have been thrown away and redistribute it directly to those in need in homeless camps and community fridges throughout the region. Hillary Cohen challenges everyone to ask yourself, "What did you do today to help your community or someone in need?" what are we crafting? These kits contain essential personal care items like toothpaste, socks, toothbrushes, combs, feminine hygiene products, soap sacks, and other essentials. We have 4 bag options: 1) Up-cycled Feed bags - Using the model of Every Day Action and taking perceived waste and redistributing it: Our primary bag patterns is an up-cycled bag that reclaims dog food or feed bags and transforms them in to reusable tote bags! We have videos below, here is the basic supply list and how to prep them for sewing: Materials: Feed bags (made of tarp-like plastic) Washing machine Tide with Oxyclean, Oxyclean, or baking soda Strong thread (Bonded UV thread recommended) Heavy Duty Polyester ok. Prepare the bags: Cut off the top and bottom of the bag. Remove any remaining crumbs. Clean the feed bags: Fill your washing machine tub as full as possible. You may have to override your tub's settings to ensure the tank is full Use Tide with Oxyclean, or Oxyclean or Baking Soda with your detergent Avoid harsh chemicals like Borax or bleach. Hang the bags to dry and i f there's still odor or oil, rewash Tips: If a bag doesn't survive the washing process, it wouldn't have survived as a bag for our partner. Toss it and be glad you didn't sew something that wouldn't last! For a larger number of bags or to involve kids, consider using a kiddie pool outside to wash them. Fill it with water, add dish soap and scrub the bags. Rinse thoroughly. By following these steps, you can transform old feed bags into durable and eco-friendly reusable bags to distribute with hygiene supplies to people experiencing homelessness. 2) Tote Bag from a Large Tarp - You can create tote bags that are functional, reusable and very sturdy using a tarp from the hardware store! A camo or dark one is preferred. 3) Large Heavy Duty Tote Bags - You can use our patterns for the Super Tote or similar pattern and create a large heavy duty bag. See below for fabric. 4) Adult sized drawstring backpacks - Sewn drawstring backpacks are a great option as they pull close and keep items from getting lost. See below for fabric. Our neighbors who are unsheltered need bags that are strong and weather resistant. Please use darker colors so they are less likely to show dirt and and stand out, which can be important for safety. Narrow rolled serger hems are recommended for single-layer blankets if you have a serger. The Remissionaries Project Overview Sheet Updated 4/1/24: currently their only need is Lapghans: Lapghans (Knit/Crochet) for snuggling with during chemotherapy, no color restrictions, in fact The Remissionaries tells us they LOVE bright colors! Try for a finished size of 36” to 45” wide by 6 0 ” to 70” long. Any pattern is fine. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Soft Cotton Beanies -(Knit/Crochet) These need to be made with soft cotton yarn or cotton/bamboo yarn for patients going through chemo treatments. Make sure the ‘cotton’ yarn you use is 100% cotton and please do not use any ‘craft’ yarn. Our partner has requested NO polyester, so check the label as some of these brands have a “cotton blend” that looks very similar to all cotton. Choose undyed, or pale-shade yarn, to minimize the amount of dye in the yarn that might be in contact with sensitive skin. As you look at hat beanie patterns, please bear in mind that ones with a lot of ‘texture’ can be irritating to sensitive skin so try to keep your pattern as smooth and bump-free as possible. Info sheet Tote Bags - Cute tote bags made from quilting cotton or lightweight canvas or tasteful denim are perfect for patients to carry items with them to chemotherapy appointments. Any pattern is ok. Pocket Prayer Quilts( Heart Hugs) - The Remissionaries would like all of the pocket quilts they receive to have hearts attached so they can go to anyone, no matter their religious preference. You can use buttons, charms, be creative just ensure they are securely fastened. We have a thoughtful Project Overview Sheet put together by Kathy Lawrence for this project, please review! You can attach the poem yourself by laminating it, or know that we will send them a stack of ready to attach poems if you aren't able. 4) Quilts - (Sewn) A snuggly blanket is always appreciated by those going through chemo. They have asked for quilted cotton type lapghans and not fleece. We recommend a lapghan designed in your choice of pattern with two layers of quilting cotton, batting or fleece in the middle and a binding. They can be machine quilted, or ‘sew as you go’ strip quilts. Aim for a finished size of 36”x48 to 45”x60" Port Pillows - (Sewn/Crochet)- This project is fast and easy. If you are sewing, The Remissionaries strongly prefers the Port Pillow with wings. . Port pillows really need to be stuffed FIRMLY to be effective. Please ensure you are really stuffing your port pillows nice and firm! Mini Tissue Holders - (Sewn/Crochet) This is a great scrap busting project! We have both crochet and sewn patterns available. Please ensure to check the seam allowance on the sewn pattern and to buy one pack of tissues to use at home to ensure your tissue holder fits a pack before you send it. Soft Scalp Washing Pads These are like a face scrubby, but need to be made from organic cotton worsted yarn, that stays soft for the sensitive scalps. Please choose un-dyed, or pale colors, so as to limit the amount of dye that may come in contact with sensitive skin. Rice Bag Heating Pads - These small flannel heating pads are super fast and easy to sew up. Christina will fill them up with rice and sew them closed, so all you have to do is create the empty shells following our super easy pattern and video tutorial created by Carol Grape carol@craftingchange.org Please remember to use COTTON THREAD and leave one entire short end open for filling with rice.
