WHERE CREATIVITY & COMPASSION MEET I magine the impact of a simple act of crafting: sewing a reusable menstrual pad that helps a middle school girl in rural Western Africa stay in school, or crocheting a winter hat that warms the head of an unhoused man on LA’s Skid Row, or one fighting for freedom in Ukraine. At Crafting Change, we're more than just crafters – we're craftivists. We match the love of crafting with tangible good works for those in need. C rafting Change was born out of the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, when crafters rose to meet the challenge of sewing masks desperately needed by healthcare workers and other frontline heroes. Recognizing the power and passion of crafters, Crafting Change has built a model to harness this power and tangibly impact the lives of those in need. S ince our founding, we've delivered over 200,000 items made by craftivists in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Canada to organizations in every state, and internationally to Canada, Nepal, Ghana, and Ukraine. From handmade masks to blankets, each item lovingly crafted by our volunteers ends up in the hands—or on the heads—of someone who needs it, changing lives one stitch at a time. B ut our work doesn't stop there. We're constantly innovating and expanding our reach, finding new ways to make a difference in the world. Whether it's through a virtual knitting and crochet circle, a local crafting event, or a global initiative, we invite you to join us in our mission to craft change and create a brighter future for all. They invest in rural and tribal citizen leaders working primarily in the areas of early childhood education, informal science education, service-learning, ecological and human health, and non profit development. They have been integral in the pandemic relief efforts for the Tribes in the entire region. what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Winter Hats Sew/Knit/Crochet/Loom 200 183 project must-knows Focus: Warm, high-quality winter hats for elementary-aged children (ages 5–12) in the Northern Rocky Mountains. Hopa Mountain will also accept hats for teens and adults, but our goal is to keep younger kids warm and healthy so they don’t miss school. What We Need: Hats must cover the ears and be functional, warm, and durable. Use high-quality yarn or fleece and follow a tested pattern. Aim for “generational quality” — hats that hold up to repeated washings and can be passed down. Tight weave to block cold air (but not stiff like a helmet). Safe construction — no embellishments that could be choking hazards. Poms are okay if washable or removable. Do Not Use: Yarn over 5 years old, unlabeled yarn, or yarn from thrift stores. Fleece that pills or patterns with only a single layer. Helpful Resources: Suggested Patterns Recommended & Tested Yarn List Questions? To ensure a shared understanding of expectations, we have developed the following policies and etiquette guidelines for our Zoom Rooms. Crafting Change Zoom Room Policies All volunteers of Crafting Change must adhere to the organization's Non-Discrimination Policy outlined below. The officers, directors, committee members, employees, and persons served by this corporation shall be selected entirely on a nondiscriminatory basis with respect to age, sex, race, religion, national origin, and sexual orientation or gender identity. It is the policy of Crafting Change not to discriminate on the basis of race, creed, ancestry, marital status, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, physical disability, veteran’s status, political service or affiliation, color, religion or national origin. To foster a positive and productive environment, the following additional policies apply to all Zoom Room participants: Crafting Commitment: Volunteers are required to use the Zoom Rooms as a time to craft for our charity partners. Our volunteer hosts dedicate their time and utilize organizational resources to facilitate these crafting sessions. By participating in Zoom Rooms, volunteers commit to supporting our organization's mission through their crafting efforts. This policy ensures that our collective efforts are focused on fulfilling our charitable goals and helping our partners. Respectful Communication: Discussions must remain respectful and avoid topics that may create conflict, such as politics, religion, or other controversial subjects. The Zoom Host will mute participants violating this policy and give a verbal warning. The Host reserves the right to remove anyone from the Zoom Room at any time if they are in violation of this policy. Please only come if you plan on crafting for our charity partners. Ask questions by raising your hand with the “Raise Hand” button, or wave at us with your actual hand if your button is not working. Use chat to ask questions that can easily be answered that way. Please do not Zoom and drive. We care about your safety and insist that you wait until you are safely out of your vehicle or parked with the engine off before you join us to craft. By following these guidelines, we can create a harmonious and productive crafting space that makes everyone feel welcome. smoke-free crafting policy Safe Crafting & Healthy Giving~Smoke-Free Crafting Environment Policy We care about the health of everyone involved in Crafting Change! This policy ensures all donated items, regardless of the charity partner, are crafted in a completely smoke-free environment, free from: Cigarette smoke Cigar smoke Pipe smoke E-cigarettes All forms of vaping Marijuana smoke (including all smokable forms) This includes homes where smokers reside, even if they smoke "outside only." **For ease of this policy, we will use the term smoke/smokers to refer to any form of inhaling and either smoke or vapor. Why Smoke-Free? We prioritize the well-being of our most vulnerable recipients, including cancer patients, NICU babies, and children, but ultimately every person deserves the same healthy items. Secondhand smoke, vapor, and even lingering residue (third-hand smoke) can cause respiratory problems, allergies, and even cancer. There is no effective way to remove this residue from crafted items. What is Third-Hand Smoke (and Vape Residue)? Even if smoking or vaping happens outside, residue can settle on clothes, hair, furniture, and linger for weeks. This invisible residue, called third-hand smoke (for cigarettes and tobacco products) or third-hand vape residue (for e-cigarettes), contains harmful chemicals that can't be easily removed through laundry or airing out a space. It can re-emit into the air or be absorbed through the skin. Studies show laundering such items may not remove contamination and could even worsen it. Maintaining a Smoke-Free Crafting Environment To participate in our volunteer crafting program, we require all volunteers to create their handmade items in a smoke-free environment. This includes: Smoke-Free Residence: Not living with smokers in the same residence. This includes full and part-time residents of your space. Understanding and Alternatives We understand this requirement may not be feasible for all volunteers. We encourage open communication and are happy to discuss alternative ways to contribute, such as: Fundraising Events: Join us on our fundraising committee and help us raise vital funds to keep our programs going. Social Media & Community Outreach: Help spread the word about Crafting Change on social media platforms and in your local community. Email Campaigns : Contribute your writing skills by helping us craft compelling email messages to our supporters. By maintaining a smoke-free crafting environment, we ensure the safety and comfort of everyone who interacts with our handmade items. For More Information on the dangers of second and third hand smoking: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Third Hand Smoke Resource Center Third Hand Smoke Is No Joke: We understand that quitting smoking can be challenging for you or your household members. At least 40% of the homeless youth in New York City identify as LGBTQ+. Knit the Rainbow works to empower and protect these youth by providing them with handmade knit & crochet winter clothing accessories. Knit the Rainbow (KtR) is the first organization of its kind in the United States, providing thousands of hand-made winter garments a year for homeless LGBTQ+ Youth. Our programs are dedicated to giving these youth a warm and fashionable protective layer of clothing that is imperative to their comfort and survival during harsh winter months. what are we crafting? Collection over until Fall 2025 project must-knows COLLECTION OVER! WILL BEGIN COLLECTING ITEMS AGAIN FALL 2025 The following information comes directly from Austin Rivers, Founder of Knit the Rainbow during my 1:1 Zoom with him as well as when he spoke during one of our Sew-A-Thons. LGBTQIA+ youth living on the streets are trying to blend in. They have been thrown out of their homes for their sexuality or gender identity. They don't want a rainbow on their body to further target them on the streets. Colors that both hide dirt and help them blend in keep them safe. COLORS : For safety and no access to washing facility, please use Black Forest Green Dark Purples Dark Blues Darker Grays Browns Camouflage Yarns Verigated Yarns in these color families Fiber Type : Washable wools and acrylic are ideal for this project. What are WE making? We keep a focus on the items they receive the least of from other volunteers. 1. Fingerless Gloves/Wristers 2. Earwarmers/Headbands 3. Cowls/Neck Warmers While our focus is on cowls, fingerless gloves and headbands/earwarmers, KtR is accepting the following items during their winter collection and we hope you will consider sending in any items you have made: Hats Scarves Socks Sweaters Gloves Scoodies Earwarmers+++ Fingerless Gloves+++ Neck Warmers/Cowls+++ +++Our focus this year as these items are the ones they receive the least of from other volunteers. TINY HEARTS: Feel free to include some tiny hearts with your items. DO NOT attach them to your item and do not leave long strings as they attach with a tag gun. You can tally them with us, but we are not adding them as an item we are collecting because we are not encouraging people to send them unless they are already sending donations of winter items. People facing poverty are not allowed to use their food stamp benefits to purchase personal hygiene products like shampoo, soap, tampons or household hygiene products like laundry or dish soap with their monthly benefits. Food pantries often don’t have these items either. These items provide dignity. Each Stitch Counts encourages you to donate your dishcloths along with dish soap to your local food pantry. However, if you prefer, you can ship donations to their HQ in New Jersey. Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Quilt Twin Size Sew Only 12 10 project must-knows We are crafting for "Young Adults" this is ages 18-24. For 2 of their programs, The Independent Supported Living Program (up to a 6 Month stay) and the Mobile Housing Navigation Center (up to a 120 Day stay), the young adults have the opportunity to stay for longer periods of time and settle down while they look for permanent housing, educational opportunity and jobs. We will be helping the young adults in these 2 programs with blankets and pillowcases to make them feel more at home during this transition. CRITICAL INFORMATION: We have been asked to not use "Pride" themed fabric or fabric that in anyway would identify the owner of the items as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. It is important to remember that these young adults are in a very vulnerable situation often having been displaced from their home due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. Twin Size Quilts They are looking for approximately 12 Twin Size Quilts per year. If you have any interest in constructing some truly lovely, warm, twin size quilts that residents of their Independent Supported Living Program could come home to, they would love that. Size: 70"x90" Fabric Restrictions: Avoid using fabrics that depict weapons, drugs, alcohol, or themes related to pride, rainbows, or any symbols that could "out" someone as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Fabric: Cotton & Batting Technique: Sewn Only Winter Collection Begins Again September 1, 2025 Winter Items For unsheltered LGBTQIA+ young adults in Nashville, please follow these guidelines: Accepted Items: We are looking for hats and gloves/mittens/fingerless gloves. Technique: Sewn, knitted, or crocheted. Color Preferences: Use subdued colors such as browns, blacks, navy blue, forest greens, etc. These colors help the young adults blend into their surroundings and feel safe. Fabric and Yarn Restrictions: Use washable wool or high-quality acrylic. Use colors that will help folks blend in. Quality: Ensure your items are well-crafted and durable, providing warmth and comfort throughout the winter months. They have expanded their mission to now distribute their bags of love to children in foster care, those that are unsheltered and victims of domestic violence. what are we crafting? We have fulfilled all of their needs to date! We are currently awaiting the charity to update their needs list. project must-knows 1. Burrito Pillow Case- These are for all ages 5-18. All pillows are all the standard size pillow no matter the age you are making for. It is appreciated if fun fabrics are used, and kids love licensed prints like Marvel, Comic Book characters like Batman and Superman, Harry Potter, Disney. The pillowcase is made from three coordinating materials. The finished size should be 20”-21” wide by 30-32” long which fits a standard pillow. Please use soft, non scratchy material: woven quilter’s cotton, woven cotton blends as well as flannel. Fabric prints to avoid would be ones with drugs, alcohol, weapons religious, or holiday prints fabric with the words mommy, daddy or family or any variant (grandma, etc.) 2. Knit/Crochet Soap Sacks- Please ensure your soap sacks end up being the standard size of a soap sack 4"x6". When soap is distributed it has to be in it's original packaging which is often a box. Often soap sacks are too small. You can use a 4x6 index card as a handy guide to keep in your project bag. It is a good idea to check your pattern every once in awhile to ensure you are meeting the size guidelines. Thank you.
