Every Day Action was created and founded by Hillary Cohen and Samantha Luu, two Directors Guild of America Assistant Directors hoping to change the way Hollywood sees food waste. Both women, having worked over 10 years on sets, have continually asked why the leftover gourmet food from catering is thrown out and not donated. Now, this 501(c)3 organization takes perceived waste and redistributes it to the homeless throughout the Los Angeles area. Working closely with Film & Television sets, they take food that would have been thrown away and redistribute it directly to those in need in homeless camps and community fridges throughout the region. Hillary Cohen challenges everyone to ask yourself, "What did you do today to help your community or someone in need?" what are we crafting? We are partnered with Every Day Action to provide them bags for the Personal Care Kits they put together to distribute to the homeless encampments in the LA area they serve. These kits contain essential personal care items like toothpaste, socks, toothbrushes, combs, feminine hygiene products, soap sacks, and other essentials. We have 4 bag options: 1) Up-cycled Feed bags - Using the model of Every Day Action and taking perceived waste and redistributing it: Our primary bag patterns is an up-cycled bag that reclaims dog food or feed bags and transforms them in to reusable tote bags! We have videos below, here is the basic supply list and how to prep them for sewing: Materials: Feed bags (made of tarp-like plastic) Washing machine Tide with Oxyclean, Oxyclean, or baking soda Strong thread (Bonded UV thread recommended) Heavy Duty/All Purpose Polyester ok. Prepare the bags: Cut off the top and bottom of the bag, do not cut down the sides. Remove any remaining crumbs and food debris Clean the feed bags: Fill your washing machine tub as full as possible Y ou may have to override your tub's settings to ensure the tank is full Use Tide with Oxyclean, or Oxyclean or Baking Soda with your detergent Avoid harsh chemicals like Borax or bleach. Hang the bags to dry and i f there's still odor or oil, rewash Tips: If a bag doesn't survive the washing process, it wouldn't have survived as a bag for our partner. Toss it and be glad you didn't sew something that wouldn't last! To clean a large number of bags or to involve kids, consider using a kiddie pool outside to wash them. Fill it with water, add dish soap and scrub the bags. Rinse thoroughly and hang. By following these steps, you can transform old feed bags into durable and eco-friendly reusable bags to distribute with hygiene supplies to people experiencing homelessness. 2) Tote Bag from a Large Tarp - You can create tote bags that are functional, reusable and very sturdy using a tarp from the hardware store! A camo or dark one is preferred. 3) Large Heavy Duty Tote Bags - You can use our patterns for the Super Tote or similar pattern and create a large heavy duty bag. See the list under backpacks for fabric to use. 4) Adult sized drawstring backpacks - Sewn drawstring backpacks are a great option as they pull close and keep items from getting lost. Our neighbors who are unsheltered need bags that are strong and weather resistant. Please use darker colors so they are less likely to show dirt and and stand out, which can be important for safety. Great fabrics for this project are: 5) Soap Sacks - Knit/Crochet soap sacks will be placed in hygiene bags. 6) Warm Winter Hats- Collecting beanies year round to distribute September 15th through January 30th. Items are only for unsheltered adults and will be skewed 70/30 male. Please use darker colors to hide dirt and not stand out, which can be important for safety. They invest in rural and tribal citizen leaders working primarily in the areas of early childhood education, informal science education, service-learning, ecological and human health, and non profit development. They have been integral in the pandemic relief efforts for the Tribes in the entire region. what are we crafting? Hopa Mountain will also accept hats for teens and adults, but our goal is to keep younger kids warm and healthy so they don’t miss school. NOTE FROM HOPA MOUNTAIN: In April of 2025 they notified us that the knit and crochet hats are the most helpful for their harsh winters. The double walled Addi Hats are really popular with the kids as they are very warm. We are not removing sewn hats from our list, however, please note their strong preference for yarn based hats. (Your sewn hats will still be very much appreciated and used!) What We Need: Hats must cover the ears and be functional, warm, and durable. Use high-quality yarn or fleece and follow a tested pattern. Aim for “generational quality” — hats that hold up to repeated washings and can be passed down. Tight weave to block cold air (but not stiff like a helmet). Fleece hats should be 2 layers. Safe construction — no embellishments that could be choking hazards. DON'Ts: - No camouflage fabric, as it's exclusively used by the military in Ghana. - Avoid religious and holiday-themed prints (Easter Bunnies, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Santa). - Exclude fabrics depicting drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or weapons. 2) Reusable Menstrual Pads Each kit we make includes 2 medium and 2 heavy pads. Pads must have 1 or 2 layers of Zorb, a bottom layer of PUL, and Kam Snaps closures. Choose dark, colorful, patterned, or busy fabrics for your topper to help hide stains. Use any template shape in sizes between 8.5" and 10.5" in length are accepted. When shipping your completed pads, please label them by absorbency and length for easier sorting. We offer resources for pad construction, including a video tutorial for first-time makers. Contact us for assistance or to order discount supplies. . KAM SNAPS: Each pad must have 2 size 20 Kam Snaps applied on the wing. Refer to our video tutorial for assistance. If applying your own snaps, test each snap multiple times to ensure security, functionality, and that satisfying snap sound. We are happy to apply snaps for you if you have a physical limitation that makes it difficult for you to apply them. Interested in purchasing Kam Snap supplies? Wet bags must be waterproof. We have one approved pattern for these bags, which has proven effective. Watch our video tutorial on properly sealing these bags. For any questions, email Martha for assistance. 4) Sewn Soap Sack The Sewn Soap Sack made from a washcloth is tailored for The Menstrual Hygiene Kit Resembling a washcloth, it offers familiarity the for girls while featuring a twill loop for convenient hanging and drying of soap. Please ensure accurate measurements and avoid using white or light colors as these will be used during menstrual cycles and get stained with blood. 5) Crochet & Knit Bandages- We're crafting cotton bandages for rural clinics/hospitals in Western Ghana. Only 5 approved yarns and one specific pattern are permitted for this project. Participants must be experienced crocheters or knitters capable of checking gauge. While the pattern is simple, consistency and gauge are crucial. Start with 2 skeins of yarn for your first 2 bandages that will be quality checked by our medical advisor before ordering more yarn. Find all necessary information on this information sheet. 7) Receiving Blankets for the NICU- We're creating swaddling/receiving blankets for the NICU at Half Assini Government Hospital in Half Assini, Ghana. Blankets should measure between 36x36 and 40x40 inches square. All blankets, regardless of style, must have finished hems. Narrow rolled serger hems are recommended for single-layer blankets if you have a serger. Accepted fabric options include: Single layer flannel 2-layer quilting cotton Single or double layer jersey Single or double layer double gauze UNDERWEAR : Each kit includes 2 pairs of underwear in girls' sizes 12/14. We make a small amount of kits with size 10/12 and size 14/16. Additional pairs in size 8 and women's size 5 are provided to schools for girls who may need sizes outside of what we offer. One key reason is that people cannot use government subsidies, such as food stamps, to purchase them. When it comes to deciding on whether to eat vs. buy soap and shampoo, the choice becomes obvious. So, S.A.CK. was created to help fill this need. In September of 2017, S.A.C.K. (Supporting A Community with Kindness), was started as a grassroots effort to connect people from all over the world while crocheting/knitting soap sacks and then donating them (with a bar of soap in each one) to homeless shelters, food pantries, veteran clinics, relief efforts and social service agencies. what are we crafting? The have 3 main programs: Emergency Shelter - up to 25 young adults in congregate shelter in local churches nightly from Nov 1 - March 31 Independent-Supported Living Program (ISLP)- up to 6 LGBTQ+ young adults supported in an apartment space Mobile Housing Navigation Center - up to 15 beds available through the Coordinated Care Entry system in partnership with Community Care Fellowship what are we crafting? We will be helping the young adults in these 2 programs with blankets and pillowcases to make them feel more at home during this transition. CRITICAL INFORMATION: We have been asked to not use "Pride" themed fabric or fabric that in anyway would identify the owner of the items as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. It is important to remember that these young adults are in a very vulnerable situation often having been displaced from their home due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. If you have any interest in constructing some truly lovely, warm, twin size quilts that residents of their Independent Supported Living Program could come home to, they would love that. Color Preferences: Use subdued colors such as browns, blacks, navy blue, forest greens, etc. These colors help the young adults blend into their surroundings and feel safe.
