Each handmade item plays a critical role in promoting dignity, health, and empowerment. 🧵 1. Cosmetic Bags Use any sewing pattern you like — suggested size is approximately 7"x9". Boxed corners are optional. Any fabric design is welcome, but please avoid prints featuring drugs, alcohol, nudity, weapons, or violence. These bags support all menstruating individuals, from teens receiving first-period kits to unhoused adults. 🎒 2. Drawstring Backpacks Please use sturdy fabric — these are distributed directly to unhoused individuals. Suggested materials: Canvas, Duck, Denim, or Upholstery fabric Do not use regular quilting cotton as it’s not durable enough for this use. 2. Soap Sacks Knit & Crochet only Please ensure your sacks are ~4"x6", use an index card as a guide if needed. We have had issues recently with many SACKS being much smaller than the pattern. SACKS need to be able to hold a full size bar of soap in a box. Needs to have a tag attached They gladly accept donations of soap as well, but it is not required to send them filled. 🩸 4. Mini Menstrual Kit (6-piece kit) Each kit must include the following items, packed together and ready to distribute: 1 Wet Bag 2 Medium Absorbency Pads (with snaps attached) 2 Heavy Absorbency Pads (with snaps attached) Be sure to mark heavy pads clearly with either a figure 8 stitch pattern or a second line of stitching. 1 Instruction Sheet How to assemble your kit for shipping: Fold and snap all 4 pads with PUL side out. Place all 4 pads and the instruction sheet inside the wet bag and place in your shipment. Note on your care slip the number of kits, not the number of each item in the kit. Print the instruction sheet is here. Important Note: If you received free PUL or Zorb from Crafting Change, do not use those materials for these kits. They were funded specifically for the Yonkofa Project’s Keep Girls in School Campaign and must only be used for that purpose. Please review the important details below before crafting. 1. Port Pillows Use our winged port pillow pattern, designed for comfort during treatment. Please stuff very full so they offer support and good protection. They should feel firm, not squishy. Making a bunch? Any sewn pattern is fine except scrub caps. Please ensure no exposed seams, as these can irritate tender scalps. We do have recommended patterns available on our site, but you’re welcome to use your own. Knit and crochet caps are also appreciated. Please avoid Addi/Sentro-style hats, as they are better suited for cold weather and not ideal for chemo patients. Currently collecting adult-sized caps for all genders. Every Day Action 01 Read about our partner charity and see the items we are crafting 02 Read the Project Must-Knows 03 Pick a pattern from our approved or suggested pattern collection 04 Shipping address, print a care sli p & tally your donation this is how it works About We are proud to support Every Day Action in North Hollywood, CA. Every Day Action was created and founded by Hillary Cohen and Samantha Luu, two Directors Guild of America Assistant Directors hoping to change the way Hollywood sees food waste. Both women, having worked over 10 years on sets, have continually asked why the leftover gourmet food from catering is thrown out and not donated. Now, this 501(c)3 organization takes perceived waste and redistributes it to the homeless throughout the Los Angeles area. Working closely with Film & Television sets, they take food that would have been thrown away and redistribute it directly to those in need in homeless camps and community fridges throughout the region. Hillary Cohen challenges everyone to ask yourself, "What did you do today to help your community or someone in need?" what are we crafting? Item Requested Craft Type Quantity Requested Quantity Still Needed Bags (Upcycled Feed Bags) Sew 50 26 Beanie Hats Sew/Knit/Crochet/Loom 100 100 project must-knows We are partnered with Every Day Action to provide them bags for the Personal Care Kits they put together to distribute to the homeless encampments in the LA area they serve. These kits contain essential personal care items like toothpaste, socks, toothbrushes, combs, feminine hygiene products, soap sacks, and other essentials. We have 4 bag options: 1) Up-cycled Feed bags - Using the model of Every Day Action and taking perceived waste and redistributing it: Our primary bag patterns is an up-cycled bag that reclaims dog food or feed bags and transforms them in to reusable tote bags! We have videos below, here is the basic supply list and how to prep them for sewing: Materials: Feed bags (made of tarp-like plastic) Washing machine Tide with Oxyclean, Oxyclean, or baking soda Strong thread (Bonded UV thread recommended) Heavy Duty Polyester ok. Prepare the bags: Cut off the top and bottom of the bag. Remove any remaining crumbs. Clean the feed bags: Fill your washing machine tub as full as possible. You may have to override your tub's settings to ensure the tank is full Use Tide with Oxyclean, or Oxyclean or Baking Soda with your detergent Avoid harsh chemicals like Borax or bleach. Hang the bags to dry and i f there's still odor or oil, rewash Tips: If a bag doesn't survive the washing process, it wouldn't have survived as a bag for our partner. Toss it and be glad you didn't sew something that wouldn't last! For a larger number of bags or to involve kids, consider using a kiddie pool outside to wash them. Fill it with water, add dish soap and scrub the bags. Rinse thoroughly. By following these steps, you can transform old feed bags into durable and eco-friendly reusable bags to distribute with hygiene supplies to people experiencing homelessness. 2) Tote Bag from a Large Tarp - You can create tote bags that are functional, reusable and very sturdy using a tarp from the hardware store! A camo or dark one is preferred. 3) Large Heavy Duty Tote Bags - You can use our patterns for the Super Tote or similar pattern and create a large heavy duty bag. See below for fabric. 4) Adult sized drawstring backpacks - Sewn drawstring backpacks are a great option as they pull close and keep items from getting lost. See below for fabric. Our neighbors who are unsheltered need bags that are strong and weather resistant. Please use darker colors so they are less likely to show dirt and and stand out, which can be important for safety. Great fabrics: 5) Soap Sacks - Knit/Crochet soap sacks will be placed in hygiene bags. 6) Warm Winter Items- Collecting winter items September 15th through January 30th. Items are only for unsheltered adults and will be skewed 70/30 male Please use darker colors to hide dirt and not stand out, which can be important for safety. They establish medical clinics in rural Ghana that provide care previously unavailable in those areas. They also have a program called "Keep Girls in School Campaign". The Yonkofa Project has teamed up with Crafting Change to provide menstrual hygiene kits to middle school girls, bandages for the rural clinics and hospitals and items for the Half Assini NICU. what are we crafting? DON'Ts: - No camouflage fabric, as it's exclusively used by the military in Ghana. - Avoid religious and holiday-themed prints (Easter Bunnies, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Santa). - Exclude fabrics depicting drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or weapons. 2) Reusable Menstrual Pads Each kit we make includes 2 medium and 2 heavy pads. Pads must have 1 or 2 layers of Zorb, a bottom layer of PUL, and Kam Snaps closures. Choose dark, colorful, patterned, or busy fabrics for your topper to help hide stains. Use any template shape in sizes between 8.5" and 10.5" in length are accepted. When shipping your completed pads, please label them by absorbency and length for easier sorting. We offer resources for pad construction, including a video tutorial for first-time makers. Contact us for assistance or to order discount supplies. . KAM SNAPS: Each pad must have 2 size 20 Kam Snaps applied on the wing. Refer to our video tutorial for assistance. If applying your own snaps, test each snap multiple times to ensure security, functionality, and that satisfying snap sound. We are happy to apply snaps for you if you have a physical limitation that makes it difficult for you to apply them. Interested in purchasing Kam Snap supplies? We recommend buying directly from Kam Snaps, a family-owned small business. They offer a great starter set with pliers and snaps! Check that kit out here , or browse the rest of their site! 3) Wet Bags Wet bags serve two main functions: holding soiled pads while girls are at school and serving as a vessel for cleaning pads at home. Wet bags must be waterproof. We have one approved pattern for these bags, which has proven effective. Watch our video tutorial on properly sealing these bags. For any questions, email Martha for assistance. 4) Sewn Soap Sack The Sewn Soap Sack made from a washcloth is tailored for The Menstrual Hygiene Kit Resembling a washcloth, it offers familiarity the for girls while featuring a twill loop for convenient hanging and drying of soap. Please ensure accurate measurements and avoid using white or light colors as these will be used during menstrual cycles and get stained with blood. 5) Crochet & Knit Bandages- We're crafting cotton bandages for rural clinics/hospitals in Western Ghana. Only 5 approved yarns and one specific pattern are permitted for this project. Participants must be experienced crocheters or knitters capable of checking gauge. While the pattern is simple, consistency and gauge are crucial. Start with 2 skeins of yarn for your first 2 bandages that will be quality checked by our medical advisor before ordering more yarn. Find all necessary information on this information sheet. 7) Receiving Blankets for the NICU- We're creating swaddling/receiving blankets for the NICU at Half Assini Government Hospital in Half Assini, Ghana. Blankets should measure between 36x36 and 40x40 inches square. All blankets, regardless of style, must have finished hems. Narrow rolled serger hems are recommended for single-layer blankets if you have a serger. Accepted fabric options include: Single layer flannel 2-layer quilting cotton Single or double layer jersey Single or double layer double gauze UNDERWEAR : Each kit includes 2 pairs of underwear in girls' sizes 12/14. We make a small amount of kits with size 10/12 and size 14/16. Additional pairs in size 8 and women's size 5 are provided to schools for girls who may need sizes outside of what we offer. Consider purchasing from our Amazon Wish List or taking advantage of BOGO sales at Fruit of the Loom, Black Friday deals or check local retailers like Target/Walmart for clearance items. We always need underwear for our kits in Girls size 12 and 14. ***PLEASE NOTE: We kindly ask that all menstrual pads comply with our guidelines for safety and effectiveness. We offer approved supplies at discounted prices for your convenience. Please feel free to reach out to us for assistance or to obtain the necessary supplies. Your support in adhering to these specifications is crucial. WILL BEGIN COLLECTING ITEMS AGAIN FALL 2025 The following information comes directly from Austin Rivers, Founder of Knit the Rainbow during my 1:1 Zoom with him as well as when he spoke during one of our Sew-A-Thons. LGBTQIA+ youth living on the streets are trying to blend in. They have been thrown out of their homes for their sexuality or gender identity. They don't want a rainbow on their body to further target them on the streets. Colors that both hide dirt and help them blend in keep them safe.
