  • Our Story | Crafting Change

Crafting Change believes in a world where crafters feel inspired and empowered to make a difference in the world around them.  Our mission is to provide a collection of projects through trustworthy organizations. Together we will make high-quality items that bring joy, comfort, and support to those in need. Our Story The 1st mask I ever made was for my daughter to wear to work after she got Covid in late March 2020. My daughter, Mackenzie, at work, masked up! My husband, Kent, is a doctor that works in rural Emergency Rooms throughout Iowa. I kept him and his nursing staff in masks and scrub caps. A Note From Our Founder Tiffany Herbert I never fully appreciated the value of my ability to sew until a global pandemic hit. Now, I know it’s a superpower. It can save lives. I never fully appreciated the power of tens of thousands of us with sewing machines, crochet hooks, computers, and Facebook accounts either. Together, we are strong. We are amazing. And we are crafting change before my very eyes every single day. I started sewing to help protect the frontline workers in my life: my daughter and my husband. I kept sewing and volunteering for organizations like GetPPE and Million Mask Challenge because I saw the difference we could make. In January 2021, I was honored to host a National Virtual Sew-A-Thon for the National Day of Service, organized by the Presidential Inaugural Committee. This event brought over 300 people together from across the United States and Canada. Together, we sewed more than 17,000 masks for pandemic relief. During our giant Zoom room, I kept hearing the same question: "What are we going to do next?" That question got me thinking... We are now mobilized. And that is a powerful thing. The urgency of the pandemic has subsided, but it revealed the vast inequities in how resources are distributed in our country. Far too many people lack access to basic items: warm hats, blankets, reusable menstrual pads, and — perhaps most importantly — someone who cares. Many nonprofit organizations work tirelessly to provide for those who don’t know where to turn. They need our help. Children need warm hats to stay healthy and attend school. Girls need menstrual pads to participate fully in their education. These are needs we can meet because we can craft these items. It is my sincere hope that you feel as empowered as I do. Together, we can craft the change we want to see in our communities and beyond. Crafting Change is about so much more than the items we create. It’s about building a community that cares. It’s about crafting change in our own lives as we come together to make a difference. When I think back to that first National Day of Service event, I remember looking into the eyes of some of the most heroic volunteers I’ve ever met. You sacrificed so much during 2020 and 2021. I knew then that I wanted to continue organizing in ways that make it easy for you to volunteer and create a meaningful impact for those in need. Crafting Change is built to do just that — for today, tomorrow, and far into the future. 💜 We remain an all volunteer organization with outstanding volunteer Craftivists and Leadership. • Bios | Crafting Change

Meet the Crafting Change Leadership Team! Sew, Knitm, Crochet for those in need with our innovative system of matching you to nonprofits who need your skills! Learn more about our Leadership Team Tiffany Herbert mailto:tiffany@craftingchange.org I founded Crafting Change in 2021 with a clear goal: to connect makers directly with organizations that need handcrafted items. I saw a gap—between people who wanted to help and causes that needed support—and I knew we could fill it. One handmade item at a time. That's what drives me: knowing that what we do matters, both for the people receiving these items and for the volunteers who make them. I’m endlessly inspired by the generosity of our volunteers and the impact we’ve been able to make together. The name Crafting Change holds a double meaning. Yes, we’re crafting items that create real change in people’s lives—but we’re also being changed in the process. That’s the heart of this work. As Executive Director, I wear all the hats—from strategic planning and nonprofit partnerships to communications, volunteer engagement, fundraising, and logistics. I make sure our programs run smoothly, our mission stays front and center, and our community of volunteers and partners feels supported every step of the way. It’s a lot—but it’s the most meaningful work I’ve ever done. Outside of Crafting Change, I'm an empty nester with three awesome adult kids and one great son-in-law. I’ve been married to my amazing husband for 34 years, and we share our home with our pups, Daisy and Mr. Peabody. When I’m not juggling logistics or cheering on our volunteers, you’ll find me at SoFi Stadium cheering on the LA Chargers, starting a new project I promised I wouldn’t start yet, or pinning a pattern I will never have time to try! Mary Dredge mailto:mary@craftingchange.org I have always been creative and crafty. I was a photo album and card maker for 5 years, studied herbalism for 3 years, and getting sustainable when the pandemic hit. Friends and family were needing masks. My sewing skills were ok, so I dusted off my sewing machine, researched the easiest mask design and I was sewing masks! It was a lonely beginning working full-time virtually during the day and then sewing masks for hours into the night. I loved helping people and found a new purpose – helping others. I wanted to do more to help those in my community. I started sewing pencil pouches for low-income high school students and filling them with basic school supplies. I was making fleece hats for outreach programs and many other small activities. It was great, but still lonely. Then I found Crafting Change by chance, a moment of watching the news on the television, I never watch. There was Tiffany talking about her nonprofit. My husband said – you should check in to that and I did. Best decision ever. After mask making was complete, I found a partner charity that I am passionate about through Crafting Change that I never would have found. By day, I am a Project Manager for a local financial company. I run my own handmade product business supporting sustainability and kindness. I love making herbal remedies and tea and can’t wait for the garden to fill in with herbs. I am always looking for ways to reform the status quo and offer support. Life is so much better doing the things we love with friends! That is Crafting Change. "I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples" – Mother Teresa. Martha Richmond mailto:martha@craftingchange.org My sister Laura and I learned from an early age that it is better to give than receive. I can’t remember a time when our family wasn’t helping someone. Be it spending time with families evacuated from hurricanes, or volunteering with service groups. Back in 1977 my mom had a devastating cerebral aneurism that resulted in her paralysis on one side. To help her feel useful and part of the community, I started making security blankets. While I stitched, I found myself thinking about who might receive our gift of love. We would take them to the NICU or Ronald McDonald House in San Antonio so she could interact with the children and parents. I would attach a stamped envelope to the blankets where mothers and children would write to her. She developed special bonds with these families and even sent a dedicated pen pal to college and nursing school. And now I send blankets to her children. That experience with mom is what started my love of sewing for others. When Covid mask making had dwindled in earIy 2021, someone recommended the National Day of Service Sew-Along. That day I found a wonderful community of like minded sewists. I was elated when shortly thereafter, Tiffany started Crafting Change. And overnight we needed partners to serve. At the time, I was working with Weld County Foster Care in Greeley, and Pipers Project in Kansas, and soon they were added as two of our first partners. What I love about Crafting Change is not only do we make items for people that need them, but we also are a dedicated group of crafters that need to be creating for others. I am honored to be part of the Board and will help to continue the amazing success of Crafting Change. I love that we have so many partners and projects so everyone can find something they enjoy. Join in on one of our weekly zooms and you will be hooked on the useful tips, and camaraderie. Let’s get Crafting Change! Mackenzie Bathauer mailto:mackenzie@craftingchange.org For the past eight years, I’ve worked at Planned Parenthood, focusing on healthcare equity and LGBTQ+ rights—issues I’m deeply passionate about and that Crafting Change actively supports. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with marginalized and vulnerable communities, helping to amplify their voices and advocate for their needs. I bring a background in nonprofit work, community engagement, and fundraising, and I’m excited to contribute those skills to furthering Crafting Change’s impact. Beyond my professional life, I’m a strong believer in the power of creativity as a tool for connection and healing. Whether it’s crafting, storytelling, or building community, I’m drawn to spaces where people can show up as their full selves and find belonging. I’ve always loved the intention and care behind handmade things, and embroidery has become one of my favorite ways to slow down and create with purpose. It’s a small but meaningful practice that reminds me how every stitch—like every act of service—can make a difference. Being part of this organization feels like a natural extension of the work I love—building a more inclusive, equitable, and compassionate world, one handmade piece at a time. Retired scientist. Photographer. Alto. Lifelong crafter. After more than a year of daily mask-making for local and national needs, it's time to bring other crafts into the fold. In the early months of Crafting Change, I joined the team as a fiber arts advisor, using my experience as a test knitter to guide craftivists towards using the best choices of yarn and patterns to make items that best served our newfound partner charities. Once we had an enthusiastic team making cold-weather items, I turned my fiber-arts attention to first aid and hygiene needs at home and abroad. My heart is with girls struggling to stay in school in Ghana, and to that end, I spend much of my energy producing menstrual hygiene kits for the Keep Girls In School Campaign. • The Keep Girls In School Campaign | Crafting Change

the keep girls in school campaign We are proud to partner with The Yonkofa Project for The Keep Girls In School Campaign to help provide reusable cloth menstrual pads to junior high school girls in rural western Ghana. According to UNICEF, 95% of girls in this region miss school the week of their period due to lack of access to period products and many drop out all together. On a recent trip to this area of Ghana with The Yonkofa Project in September 2021 our Executive Director, Tiffany Herbert, had the privilege to speak to the Headmistresses from several local schools as well as the local Doctor about how our menstrual kits will impact their Village. She also had the great honor of visiting 3 local schools and meeting with classrooms of girls to talk about these kits and demonstrate how they work. what supplies do you need? Ready to start sewing? Crafting Change Zoom Room Policies All volunteers of Crafting Change must adhere to the organization's Non-Discrimination Policy outlined below. The officers, directors, committee members, employees, and persons served by this corporation shall be selected entirely on a nondiscriminatory basis with respect to age, sex, race, religion, national origin, and sexual orientation or gender identity. It is the policy of Crafting Change not to discriminate on the basis of race, creed, ancestry, marital status, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, physical disability, veteran’s status, political service or affiliation, color, religion or national origin. To foster a positive and productive environment, the following additional policies apply to all Zoom Room participants: Crafting Commitment: Volunteers are required to use the Zoom Rooms as a time to craft for our charity partners. Our volunteer hosts dedicate their time and utilize organizational resources to facilitate these crafting sessions. By participating in Zoom Rooms, volunteers commit to supporting our organization's mission through their crafting efforts. This policy ensures that our collective efforts are focused on fulfilling our charitable goals and helping our partners. Respectful Communication: Discussions must remain respectful and avoid topics that may create conflict, such as politics, religion, or other controversial subjects. The Zoom Host will mute participants violating this policy and give a verbal warning. We care about your safety and insist that you wait until you are safely out of your vehicle or parked with the engine off before you join us to craft. By following these guidelines, we can create a harmonious and productive crafting space that makes everyone feel welcome. smoke-free crafting policy Safe Crafting & Healthy Giving~Smoke-Free Crafting Environment Policy We care about the health of everyone involved in Crafting Change! This policy ensures all donated items, regardless of the charity partner, are crafted in a completely smoke-free environment, free from: Cigarette smoke Cigar smoke Pipe smoke E-cigarettes All forms of vaping Marijuana smoke (including all smokable forms) This includes homes where smokers reside, even if they smoke "outside only." **For ease of this policy, we will use the term smoke/smokers to refer to any form of inhaling and either smoke or vapor. Why Smoke-Free? We prioritize the well-being of our most vulnerable recipients, including cancer patients, NICU babies, and children, but ultimately every person deserves the same healthy items. Secondhand smoke, vapor, and even lingering residue (third-hand smoke) can cause respiratory problems, allergies, and even cancer. There is no effective way to remove this residue from crafted items. What is Third-Hand Smoke (and Vape Residue)? Even if smoking or vaping happens outside, residue can settle on clothes, hair, furniture, and linger for weeks. This invisible residue, called third-hand smoke (for cigarettes and tobacco products) or third-hand vape residue (for e-cigarettes), contains harmful chemicals that can't be easily removed through laundry or airing out a space. It can re-emit into the air or be absorbed through the skin. Studies show laundering such items may not remove contamination and could even worsen it. Maintaining a Smoke-Free Crafting Environment To participate in our volunteer crafting program, we require all volunteers to create their handmade items in a smoke-free environment. This includes: Smoke-Free Residence: Not living with smokers in the same residence. This includes full and part-time residents of your space. Understanding and Alternatives We understand this requirement may not be feasible for all volunteers. We encourage open communication and are happy to discuss alternative ways to contribute, such as: Fundraising Events: Join us on our fundraising committee and help us raise vital funds to keep our programs going. Social Media & Community Outreach: Help spread the word about Crafting Change on social media platforms and in your local community. Email Campaigns : Contribute your writing skills by helping us craft compelling email messages to our supporters. By maintaining a smoke-free crafting environment, we ensure the safety and comfort of everyone who interacts with our handmade items. • Give Back Box Statement | Crafting Change

Our Statement on Give Back Box What is the issue? Almost 3 years ago we signed up with Give Back Box to help volunteers save money on shipping. In January 2021, Crafting Change noticed that all of the labels on donations coming to HQ had identical tracking numbers. We also realized that all of the labels we printed out to ship our Keep Girls In School Campaign Kits to The Yonkofa Project ALSO had identical tracking numbers. These packages were rejected by our local UPS Store alerting us that it was fraudulent to put the same label on more than one package. This began our dialogue with Monika W, the Founder & CEO of GIve Back Box. Give Back Box Response (or lack thereof) Crafting Change to Give Back Box January 15, 2022 Monika, My 3 packages were rejected today by my local UPS store because all 3 had the same tracking number on them. The owner of the UPS Store said that this was fraudulent and that every single package should have it’s own unique tracking number. As a receiver of Give Back Box shipments for my own nonprofit, Crafting Change, I noticed that all of my parcels have the same tracking number as well. In fact, we have a lost parcel and tried to track it and have been unable to because it shows “delivered” but it was in fact one of these other boxes I received because it had the same tracking number on it. I don’t understand why each shipment doesn’t have it’s own unique tracking number on it? There seems to be one tracking number for all packages to Crafting Change. One tracking number for all packages to The Yonkofa Project, etc. "~Tiffany Herbert Give Back Box to Crafting Change January 17, 2022 Hi! Yes, each box needs a new unique label. It looks like our system error. However I see UPS do charge us for each box, even with duplicate labels. I'm sending you new labels now via UPS email and we will fix this ASAP. Thank you so much and apologize for it. Crafting Change to Give Back Box February 5, 2022 Hi Monika, I just wanted to see if you had progress in identifying this error as I see the labels for my charity are all still coming in with the same tracking number. In fact I just printed out a label to send to someone who wanted to donate items to us and noticed that it shows as “delivered” …. This means it is a duplicate. Tiffany Herbert Crafting Change Give Back Box to Crafting Change February 8, 2022 We received an email reply that had nothing to do with the issue at hand. Crafting Change to Give Back Box February 9, 2022 I replied reiterating the full issue with duplicate labels continuing to happen. Monika, I think we had some miscommunication. You said on 1/17/22 that each box needs a unique label. However all boxes are still getting the identical label/tracking number. That is what I was inquiring about. What I am not clear on is that all labels coming to Crafting Change have the same tracking number. All the labels going to The Yonkofa Project have the same tracking number. This does not seem right as there is no way to track them. I understand you are being billed for the labels, but you said that this was a glitch in your system you were working out, but it is still occurring. I noticed after you and I talked that the labels now have a new tracking number than they did in January, but it is a “new” duplicate one. Our charity is getting donations, which is amazing and I am grateful, I just am concerned because having the same tracking number on all of these packages, as you said in your initial email, is not correct but is still occurring. I was just inquiring when you thought it might be fixed? I, as a donor who loves to use Give Back Box to other charities, have the issue that my UPS store will not accept boxes with identical tracking numbers on them. If I want to donate to XYZ charity and print out 2 labels with the same tracking number and take them to my local UPS store, they won’t take them. It is also an issue, because when someone prints out the label, the tracking number is useless as it will show that their package has already been delivered even though it is sitting in their hands because the tracking number is being used over and over again,it is impossible to track a package. I so appreciate your attention to this, I just want to understand when Give Back Box will be fixing this glitch in your system that is causing the same label/tracking number to be used for all packages to each charity. it clearly is not your intention and not what has happened since you started in 2012. I’m sure your IT department can identify what is going on and get it fixed so everyone is getting the correct labels they have paid for. ~Tiffany Give Back Box to Crafting Change February 10, 2022 I will look into this and get back to you. End of Emails Information is POWER! WARNING: USE GIVE BACK BOX AT YOUR OWN RISK. Crafting Change does not have any affiliation nor do we endorse or support using them. However, we are keeping them up as a cost-saving option. If you jump through the hoops successfully you will get he fresh label and it will be valid, trackable and recognized by UPS. But it will not be without frustration. Please be aware that we have no ability to help in getting you your labels any faster. We are not responsible for nor do we have control over lost/destroyed packages. What goes wrong? Everyone who purchases that charity's label receives the exact same label with the exact same tracking number. Give Back Box has told us that this is a "glitch" in their system. This "glitch" has been going on now for over 2 years. If you use the first label you are sent, it 100% has a used tracking number and YOUR BOX WILL LIKELY NOT ARRIVE AT IT'S DESTINATION. We have reports of 3 volunteers whose packages have been lost or destroyed by UPS. Crafting Change as well as many of our partner charities are partnered with Give Back Box to purchase a $20 UPS label. You can ship a box 50 pounds and 108" in girth. With all of the difficulties, if you follow the below outlined procedures, you can get a usable, trackable label for your shipment. CRITICAL INFORMATION ON HOW TO USE GBB: After you make your purchase and you receive your email with your download, please immediately forward that email to Monika info@givebackbox.com Write: "Can I please have a fresh label with an unused tracking number? Thank you." DO NOT USE THE LABEL IN THAT DOWNLOAD WITH YOUR INITIAL PURCHASE it is FRAUDULENT. You may have to email Monika multiple times to get your valid label. I advise emailing her every 2-3 days until she responds. (People have been waiting up to 4 weeks for a label as of 9/15/24) You will get an email from Monika saying Yes and a 2nd email direct from UPS saying "Your Return Label is ready." That is the label you use to ship. You have jumped over all the hurdles, print your new label, track your package and cheer when it arrives!
